Akinorium (Setouchi Triennale 2022)

Today a very brief retrospective from the Setouchi Triennale 2022 with a favorite among visitors and locals alike.

It’s Akinorium by Akinori Matsumoto.

Akinorium was created in 2015 during a series of workshops that took place on Ogijima. They were led by the artist and attended by islanders so it’s a bit inaccurate to credit Mr. Matsumoto solely. While he designed the project and if you’re familiar with his art, it won’t feel out of place among his other works, it really is a collective project.

However, it is important to underline that it is one of the few Setouchi Triennale artworks (possibly the only one?) to be owned by an island community (Ogijima’s). Most of the other works belong to the festival’s executive committee (for most artworks) and a few are owned by private entities (most notably the Benesse art.)

If you want to see more of it, here are the posts where it’s mentioned on the blog.

I especially invite you to read this one that details it the most:

And as a bonus a small video (after all movement and sound are some of the most important aspects of the artwork.) I wish it was a bit better, but that will have to do for now. (back in the day, I often had the opportunity to be there alone if I wanted to – which is necessary to make a good video of the place – but nowadays it very rarely opens outside of the festival)

That’s all for today.
