When one is aboard the ferry to Itsukushima (better known to the world as Miyajima), it’s usually for a very specific reason. And when one sees that reason for the very first time, this is what one sees:
I can assure you that when you go to the island for the very first time, it may not be the most beautiful view of Itsukushima Shrine and its Otorii, but it’s probably the most exciting one.

It is truly amazing and is classified as a “Special Place of Scenic Beauty” in Japan.
I have to admit that I find these classifications a bit dubious.
I mean, I’m sure they make sense in the context in which they were created, but nowadays many people misuse and misinterpret them.
I’m thinking particularly about the “3 great gardens” one, which is regularly misused as “the three best gardens” by many people. Maybe it’s a translation error, I don’t know.
That being said, Itsukushima shrine is one of the most amazing places not only in Japan, but also on Earth. 🙂
