A few times a year (three or four) Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu opens its doors after sunset for some special events such as the cherry blossoms or when trees are changing into their autumnal colors.
This is what is happening now. Since last Friday and until December 2nd, Ritsurin Garden will stay open until 9pm (it usually closes around nightfall). For the occasion the garden has special illuminations and also various events such as concerts on the week-ends.
So if you have the opportunity to go to Takamatsu before December 2, make sure you don’t miss seeing Ritsurin Garden at night.
As I didn’t go yet (that was the plan for today, but the weather decided otherwise), here are the pictures I took last year (not my best pictures, I still need to learn how to better take night pictures) but that will give you an idea.
Of course, no picture can do justice to the actual Ritsurin Garden’s beauty.

You’re right, it is indeed worth seeing in person. Pictures don’t do it complete justice, but you can at least get a sense. I went there myself for a nighttime viewing on the 24th. It is absolutely stunning. You’ll be seeing a post on my blog about it sometime in the near future as well 😉 You got better shots than I did though for the most part. It is tough for my camera at night without a tripod so I was forced to use my iPhone.
Hopefully, I’ll get to go this week-end, and I’ll try to take pictures with my new camera, although I have yet to master it for night pictures.
Good luck! I look forward to seeing them!
