This Project of Signboards of Shikkui and Kote was designed by Kazuko Murao and can be found in the streets of Tomari, one of Honjima‘s villages.
These embossed disks are made of plaster and they are related to certain traditional elements of the island. They are located in various spots in the village.
I’m not going to lie, I was a bit surprised to find this style of art at the Setouchi Triennale 2013. Sure, they have a certain traditional aesthetic value (if I understood right, this kind of plaster disk used to exist on the island, back in the days), but one must admit that they are a bit underwhelming compared to some of the more amazing artworks that can be found here and there.
However, they do fit perfectly in the streets of Tomari and the look like they’ve always been there and are a long time part of the “landscape”.
Note that they are in the village permanently and that about a dozen are spread in its streets.
