When you walk to the lighthouse on Ogijima, this is the first glimpse you get of it. It’s also one of my favorite views along the way.
Indeed, the important thing when you go to the lighthouse, is not the lighthouse itself (although it is interesting in many ways, like it’s the only stone lighthouse of the area), but the view from this part of Ogijima. As well as the beach that is pretty great.

Hi David, That is a great view from the beach. Are you allowed to bring a picnic basket and beach gear and spend a day at the beach?
I assume that you are allowed to do that.
I know there is this strange thing of opening and closing of beaches in Japan, but I’m not sure whether it’s a legal thing or simply a traditional one.
That being said, it concerns only swimming. Picnicking and hanging out at the beach is allowed at all time. Actually there is even a small spot next to the lighthouse (as well as on the other side of the island) where one can camp.
