Today’s preview interview for the Setouchi Triennale 2013 is with Véronique Joumard, who is one of the two French artists who will take part in the Triennale (the other one being choreographer Didier Théron).
1. For starters, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a French artist. I’ve visited Japan several times, first for pleasure, but also for various artistic projects. I spent several months in the Villa Kujoyama in Kyōto. I’ve always liked spending time in Japan and working in the country even though I would have trouble explaining exactly why I find this country so charming and interesting. I worked twice with Art Front Gallery before, for the Echigo Tsumari Triennale as well as for a sculpture project during the Soccer World Cup that took place in Japan and South Korea in 2002.
2. How did you hear about the Setouchi Triennale?
During a conference about Boltanski’s project in the beginning of 2010, Fram Kitagawa, the director of Art Front Gallery was there to introduce the Setouchi Triennale. He invited to come see the first edition back then.
3. What made you want to take part in the 2013 edition?
The quality of what I saw in 2010, the beauty of this area that was previously unknown to me and the will to have a new project in Japan.
4. Did you get to choose the location where your artwork will be shown? If yes, what guided your choice?
Originally, I had chosen Ogijima, I find it very beautiful when you see it from a boat hoping from island to island. Also its relief fits well with the project that I wanted to make. Unfortunately, that was not possible, so instead Art Front Gallery asked me to locate my work in Takamatsu Airport, especially in the new section that will open in March.
5. What can you tell us about your upcoming work for the Triennale?
It’s a project that plays with optical and visual illusions, close to those in-between moments one experiences when traveling.
Thank you Ms Joumard for your cooperation.

I think I remember people from down here heading up for the art festival. They said it was pretty nice.
I’m wondering if I might get myself to go.
Optical illusion artwork is great. I like that balloon thing. I can’t figure it out.
If you get the chance, you really should go. You won’t regret it.
